Project Background

Procrastination is a complex and often misunderstood phenomenon involving the interplay of cognitive, behavioral, and environmental factors, leading to anxiety, low self-esteem, and decreased efficiency. In this project, we aim for a comprehensive understanding of the core aspects of procrastination and seek innovative solutions to assist those affected, enhancing time management, work efficiency, and overall life quality. After thorough research and summary with the team, I personally conducted further economic research on the relevant market and completed the related design.

Methodology Process

Affinitization

Affinitiization refers to the process of grouping or categorizing items based on their similarities, organizing them into coherent groups to help simplify complex data or concepts.

We wrote all the raw data sentences on yellow sticky notes and then, based on the principle of similarity, categorized them into blue, pink, and green sticky notes."

Step 1: Collect individual data points and write each on a yellow sticky notes.

Step 3: Organize similar sticky notes and put them together.

Step 2: Organize the yellow sticky notes all together and stick them all over the wall without rules.

Step 4: Organize the blue yellow sticky notes (labels important to users) to inform us of what matters to the users.

Step 5: Organize the pink sticky notes (labels of key issues) to highlight the critical issues that are important to users.

Step 6: Organize the green notes (labels of core stories) to display the core narratives or user insights.

The Ideal Experience of Avoid Procrastination

This is a synthesized representation of what avoid procrastination values. Feeling Relaxed and Accomplished is the core emotion, as represented by the framework. Surrounding the core are the five main propellers of the journey: Clear, Balance, Proactively, Persistent and Self-control.

Around the propellers are the seven values supporting the core: Enlightening, Orderly way, Enjoyable, Self-motivated, Focused, Strategies and Reminding.

Framework

Framework Detail

  • We hope everyone avoids procrastination when being proactive.

  • We face tasks or plans with courage, rather than putting them off.

  • Actively avoiding procrastination is both enjoyable and a form of self-motivation.

  • We feel pleasure in the tasks we commit to and have a strong urge to complete them during execution.

  • Self-motivation enhances our drive to tackle tasks and helps us avoid procrastination.

  • We hope everyone has a clear mindset, providing specific task requirements for clients.

  • Clear thinking gives individuals a sense of direction in their work.

  • Guided statements, including mentorship and advisory suggestions, can make users aware of effective methods to accomplish their tasks.

  • A constructive piece of guidance can enhance users' working methodologies and boost their efficiency.

  • When we can persevere, we can avoid procrastination. The concept of persistence encourages people not to abandon their tasks.

  • This mindset might serve as a reminder, prompting individuals to finish tasks, or as a strategy or plan to assist others in better organizing their tasks and establishing priorities

Self-control prevents procrastination and requires strong willpower. This control:

  • Boosts work efficiency by enhancing task focus, planning, emotional regulation, and perseverance.

  • Preserves mental health by prioritizing primary tasks, reducing stress, and improving task quality.

  • Promotes a swift return to regular work, emphasizing the elimination of distractions, efficient habits, and setting boundaries to maintain maximum focus and productivity.

  • We hope everyone can strike a balance between life and work to prevent procrastination.

  • People are not machines; sometimes, motivation is needed, and the key to avoiding procrastination lies in being orderly and organized.

  • To combat procrastination, it's essential to balance relaxation and stress. Engaging in appropriate leisure activities before working is beneficial, provided it doesn't interfere with learning.

  • After task completion, it's good to reward oneself with a day off for relaxation and fun.

  • During difficult emotional times, finding ways to regulate our emotions is crucial. Such strategies help maintain a balanced life and work, allowing us to avoid procrastination and feel at ease.

Market Research

After completing the 'Design Whitepaper on Avoiding Procrastination', I contemplated further applications and wondered if the research data could be used to create a solid design product. Consequently, I conducted a detailed secondary market research targeting students.

In 2018, Professor Devin Price of Loyola University's Social Psychology department suggested that the common belief that students procrastinate because they don't care about their assignments is often incorrect. The underlying reasons for procrastination typically fall into two categories: fear of failure or confusion about starting a task and its significance.

In a 2002 study, college students were assigned to proofread three papers and submit their work at their own pace. They could opt for evenly spaced deadlines set by the school, set multiple personal deadlines, or just one final deadline. The results showed that students with evenly spaced deadlines identified the most errors and achieved the highest scores.

Problem

  • Students want to relax before completing assignments, resulting in a rushed project and poor quality work.

  • Students can make plans but are easily distracted by other things.

  • Excessive procrastination robs students of the motivation to finish their projects on schedule.
